SOTD: Frogpond - 'Even Now' from Count to Ten (1996)
I regret I never got to see Frogpond live. I'm told they put on a great show back in the day. By the time I moved to Kansas City from Georgia in December 1999 the band had already broken up or I was too new and unaware to know what I was missing. Of course in 1999 I knew that 'Even Now' was a smoking tune and a regular on the car stereo when I needed something loud. But I don't recall knowing they were from Kansas City. In any case it's my loss.
The buzzing guitars opening 'Even Now' set the tone before the bass guitar and drums drop into the mix. The vibe totally makes sense upon finding out Art Alexakis of Everclear produced Count to Ten. Amped guitars, prominent bass, and drums high in the mix make this a great album for those days when you need to rock out, but don't want crappy aggro-rock. It certainly doesn't hurt the all-female Frogpond to have Heidi Phillips singing either. Her slightly husky, smokey vocals add an unexpectedly softer touch to the tune. Phillips vocals bring balance to the overall mix and feeling of Frogpond. There may not be anything especially groundbreaking about the band overall, but 'Even Now' provides a great reason to turn up the stereo and drum on the steering wheel. Partnered with 'Trust?' from the same album you have a potent one-two of mid-90's alt-rock.
