SOTD: Nick Heyward - 'Today' from The Apple Bed (1996)

I've been posting a personal Song of the Day for several months now on Twitter, but it occurred to me that sometimes people might like to hear my suggestions without having to track down every obscure song. Since Posterous allows MP3s to be attached to posts, why not take advantage of the technology?

I had Nick Heyward (ex-Haircut 100 member) come up on the trusty iPod this afternoon. The Apple Bed is an older album that fell into my lap quite by accident several years ago. Quite honestly I didn't expect a lot as I had enjoyed the last release (From Monday to Sunday), but hadn't fallen for it. For whatever reason I connected with the Apple Bed. The guitars are more prominant in the mix than I expected based on Heyward's previous work and the songwriting seemed more focused. Even now, many years later, I can still drag this out and enjoy it for what it is: a competent, hook-filled, mostly upbeat album.

Even though 'Today' is the song that popped up, I'm not even sure it's my favorite track. The opening 'Stars in Her Eyes' or the horn-filled 'Just Like Sorrow' may take that title. In any case, the Apple Bed is a largely undiscovered slice of musical enjoyment.
